Fire Activity at SBD International Airport

The San Bernardino Air Tanker Base is strategically located at San Bernardino International Airport (SBD) to fight wildfires in our region. The base’s recent activation, from mid-August 2022 through the Labor Day weekend, was in response to record-breaking temperatures that contributed to wildfires.

Aerial firefighters flew a variety of aircraft while focusing on fire suppression and safety in the air and for personnel on the ground. SBD thanks the tanker base personnel for the important work they do. These first responders fly in the face of danger to selflessly save people and protect property.

SBD staff communicated about the base activation via the airport’s social media channels, explaining to neighbors the reasons why unique and very large aircraft, both commercial and military, were regularly flying in and out of SBD.
